Young Adult Peer Support

The YAPS Project, delivered by Ponthafren Association, offers peer support mentoring to young people (16-25 years old) who experience mental health issues, by helping to give them a voice of their own in the development of services.

Are you 18-25 and interested in becoming a mentor or do you work with 18-25 years olds who might be? The first phase of our project is to recruit, train and support Youth Peer Mentors, and coordinate activities and opportunities for them to advocate for the needs of young people who experience mental health issues.

We can offer the following voluntary participation opportunities:

  • Peer support mentor
  • Help Organise and take part in the project's networking events
  • Participate in focus groups providing feedback on newsletters, websites, brochures, leaflets etc

"Mentoring is a one-to-one, non-judgemental relationship in which an individual voluntarily gives time to support and encourage another. This relationship is typically developed at a time of transition in the mentee's life"

What is mentoring?

Mentoring in the YAPS project is a voluntary one-to-one relationship between young people to help others achieve their goals. Mentoring aims to make constructive changes to the life and behaviour of young people and to get their voices heard; it involves listening, encouraging, explaining, guiding, and providing a sense of continuity and stability.

A mentor can be defined as someone who helps others to achieve their potential. Mentoring relationships have a clear focus: mentors help mentees to reach their goals in relation to education and employment, offending, drug use, family/peer relationships, independence, and personal well-being. By helping to set small, realistic and achievable steps, mentors help others to meet their goals.
